Heating system cleaning agents: CIP process chemicals and equipment for a professional service result
Periodic flushing of heating and DHW systems is a necessary condition for extending the service life of heat exchangers, pumps and valves. Over time, systems accumulate scale deposits, corrosion products (magnetite) and an organic biofilm, which reduce heat transfer efficiency (by up to 40%) and increase pump electricity consumption.
Main groups of flushing chemicals
- Acid (pH 1-3): for removing scale and magnetite. Alfa Laval P-Scale, Rothenberger Roclean.
- Alkaline (pH 10-12): for biofilm and organic deposits. Roclean for underfloor heating, REMS Fill Cleaner.
- Neutralisers (pH 7): after acid flushing, so that the system is safe. Alfa Laval P-Neutra.
Flushing equipment (CIP stations)
- Rothenberger ROMATIC 20 - 15 L capacity, a flushing station for underfloor heating and small systems. Reverse function (two-way flow).
- REMS Calc-Push 21 - 21 L capacity, 30 L/min throughput, 1 bar pressure. No reverse, suitable for the standard deposit removal procedure.
- In the Amegata.lt range - auxiliary items (filter kits, litmus strips for pH control, connection accessories).
CIP process stages
- Assessment of system parameters - pH, electrical conductivity, back pressure (indicates the level of deposits).
- Circulation flushing - chemicals as a ~5-10% concentration solution, 40-60 °C, flow through the equipment for 20-60 min.
- Contact time - circulating or standing for 2-4 h (depends on the thickness of the deposits).
- Neutralisation + rinsing - the system is filled with supply water and the solution is drawn out.
- pH control - it must return to 6.5-7.5. If not - repeat the neutralisation.
When to flush the system
- New system (removal of the installer's slag) - MANDATORY, before pressure testing.
- System in use - every 3-5 years, depending on water quality.
- Before replacing components (heat exchanger, pump) - always.
- If the pressure drop has increased by more than 20% from the initial value - it is time to flush.
In the Amegata.lt range
We have the full CIP process line - chemicals + equipment + accessories. For B2B customers (heating companies, installers) - consultation on the flushing protocol for your specific system. Delivery within 24 hours, competitive prices on project orders.
Common questions
Can systems be flushed without shutting them down?
No. The CIP process requires the heat transfer medium flow to be switched off, the isolation valves closed and the flushing station connected separately. System downtime - 4-8 h (depends on size).
Will acid flushing not damage the metal?
Modern Rothenberger, Alfa Laval and REMS chemicals contain inhibitors - they protect steel, cast iron, copper and stainless steel from excessive erosion. Aluminium (a rarity in heating systems) requires special products.
Is it suitable for drinking water (DHW)?
Alfa Laval P-Scale and Roclean for underfloor heating have food / drinking water certificates (WRAS, DVGW). Others - only for the technical part of the system; after flushing, ALWAYS rinse with drinking water until the pH stabilises.
How do I assess whether flushing is needed?
Three main indicators: (1) the heat exchanger Δp is more than 20% higher than the initial value; (2) heating system efficiency is falling (large supply/return T gaps); (3) visible rust or deposits when draining the system water.
