Have questions?
TL;DR: Alfa Laval P-Scale — sulphamic acid (H₃NSO₃) powder cleaner with an integrated corrosion inhibitor. Designed for removing calcium carbonate and other inorganic scale from plate heat exchangers via CIP (Clean-in-Place) — no disassembly.
  • Application: descaling and inorganic-deposit removal from plate heat exchangers
  • Active substance: sulphamic acid + corrosion inhibitor
  • Solution pH: acidic (typically 2-4 depending on concentration)
  • Used with: Alfa Laval CIP unit or equivalent circulation pump

Where P-Scale is used

Plate heat exchangers (CB brazed range, M/T/TS gasketed range, AlfaNova) accumulate calcium carbonate deposits on plate surfaces over time — especially in DHW, DH, and industrial cooling circuits. Scale reduces the heat transfer coefficient (K), raises pressure drop (Δp), and cuts capacity. P-Scale dissolves inorganic deposits in a single 2-4 h service cycle without disassembly. After cleaning, use Alfa P-Neutra (SKU 3284000601) to neutralise the acid.

PurposeCalcium carbonate & inorganic scale removal
Application methodCIP (Clean-in-Place) circulation
Recommended concentration2-10 % (per scale thickness — see Alfa Laval CIP guide)
Procedure time2-4 h (at 40-50 °C)
Plate compatibilityStainless steel, titanium (lab-verified by Alfa Laval)
Gasket compatibilityEPDM, NBR (Alfa Laval standard) — lab-verified
Post-clean neutralisationAlfa P-Neutra (SKU 3284000601)
Professional note: P-Scale must never be used without P-Neutra neutralisation — acidic solution cannot be discharged to sewer directly and may attack downstream metals. Optimal working temperature — 40-50 °C: at 20 °C reaction is too slow, above 60 °C the acid begins to decompose and efficiency drops. Record the initial state (heat transfer, Δp) before cleaning to objectively assess the outcome.

When to choose P-Scale

  • DHW plate heat exchangers with noticeable capacity loss (≥15 % vs. new)
  • Systems with water hardness > 10 °dH
  • Routine preventive service every 3-5 years (CB/M range brazed)
  • After exchanger operation with process water (cooling loops)
  • Compatibility: all Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers with stainless steel / titanium plates; use caution with AlfaNova (SS brazing) — consult Alfa Laval

Frequently asked questions

Is P-Neutra required after cleaning?

Yes, mandatory. The acidic solution must be neutralised to pH 6-8 before sewer discharge. Alfa P-Neutra (SKU 3284000601) is added to the used P-Scale solution until neutral pH is reached.

Can it be used without a CIP unit?

Technically — yes, if an equivalent circulation pump with solution tank and heater is available. In practice — Alfa Laval CIP delivers controlled flow, temperature, and time, hard to match with an ad-hoc setup.

How to calculate required P-Scale?

Depends on exchanger volume and scale thickness. Typical dosing — 5-10 % mass concentration, circulated 2-4 h. Example: CB60 (~5 L internal volume) needs 250-500 g P-Scale. See Alfa Laval CIP guide for details.

Any health hazard?

Sulphamic acid is skin and eye irritant. Goggles, gloves, and lab coat are required. SDS supplied with delivery. Well-ventilated area required.

Suitable for gasketed exchangers (M/T range)?

Yes, if gaskets are EPDM or NBR (Alfa Laval standard). For special gasket materials (Viton, FEP) — consult Alfa Laval before cleaning.
