Have questions?
TL;DR: Hexonic B45 — compact shell-and-tube heat exchanger with corrugated stainless steel tubes, designed to heat pool water from an external heat source (gas / solid-fuel boiler, heat pump, solar collectors, district heating).
  • Application: pool water heating (chlorinated water)
  • Heat capacity: 6–26 kW (heat source T 40–90 °C, pool T 20 °C)
  • Recommended pool volume: up to 15 m³
  • Material: stainless steel (shell and tubes)

Where B45 is used

B45 is chosen for private pool heating systems up to 15 m³ — typically medium-sized outdoor or indoor pools, hot tub (SPA) side circuits, small indoor pools and low-capacity solar systems. The heat source side connects to the boiler / heat pump circuit; the pool water side — after the filter, before returning water to the pool. The straight corrugated tube design delivers turbulent flow at low pressure loss and provides a self-cleaning effect against fouling.

Pool heat-up time — quick calculation

Exchanger capacity: P = Q × ΔT × 1.163 (kW). Pool heat-up time: τ = V × ρ × Cp × ΔT / P, where V — pool volume (m³), ρ ≈ 1000 kg/m³, Cp ≈ 4.186 kJ/(kg·K).

Example: 15 m³ pool, +5 °C rise, with B45 running at ~18 kW (heat source 70 °C) → E = 15,000 × 4.186 × 5 = 314 MJ ≈ 87 kWh; τ ≈ 87 / 18 ≈ 4.8 h.

Designer note: B45 is designed for chlorinated pool water (stainless steel). For salt-electrolysis pools — choose the Hexonic TI series (titanium). Recommended flows: pool water 12 m³/h, heat source 3 m³/h. Drain the tube side before winter (freezing bursts the corrugated tube).

When to choose B45

  • Private pools up to 15 m³ (typical 3 × 5 m surface, 1.2 m depth)
  • Hot tubs / SPA pools (higher temperature regimes)
  • Heat source: gas / solid-fuel boiler, heat pump (air-water / ground-water), solar collectors, district heating substation
  • Chlorinated water (not salt electrolysis)

Frequently asked questions

Why B45 for chlorinated water only, not salt electrolysis?

Stainless steel resists low chlorine levels (up to ~1 ppm), but in salt-electrolysis pools (5–7 g/l NaCl) the chloride concentration causes stress corrosion cracking. For those systems, choose the Hexonic TI series (titanium tubes) — same capacity range, but salt-resistant.

How is the size selected by pool volume?

Rule of thumb: exchanger capacity should 3–5 times exceed daily pool heat losses. A 15 m³ pool with a cover typically requires 12–18 kW effective capacity — B45 fits with a 60–70 °C heat source. If the pool is uncovered or in colder climate — step up to B70 or B130.

Suitable for hot tubs (SPA)?

Yes — B45 is among the best choices for small SPA pools (1–5 m³). Higher pool temperature (38–40 °C) is reached quickly with B45 — typically 1.5–3 h from cold start.

Compatible with an air-water heat pump?

Yes, but note the heat pump output temperature: often no higher than 55 °C. Per the catalog, at 50 °C source B45 delivers ~10 kW — good for maintenance, but for fast heat-up choose B70 or B130.

What maintenance is required?

Welded construction without gaskets — no sealing element replacement needed. We recommend draining the tube side in winter (if the pool is not heated) and CIP flushing once per season if fouling signs appear (reduced heat transfer, higher Δp).
