TL;DR: Danfoss ESM-11 — Pt1000 surface temperature sensor mounted
directly on the pipe (no pocket required) using the supplied clamp for DN 15-65 piping. Fast response (τ = 3 s) allows proper monitoring of heating loop supply/return temperature where installing an immersion pocket is not feasible.
- Type: Pt1000 (class B per EN 60751)
- Measuring range: 0…+100 °C
- Ingress protection: IP32
- Mounting: pipe surface DN 15-65 (clamp included)
Where ESM-11 is used
ESM-11 fits situations where you need fast, accurate pipe temperature data, but the piping has no immersion pocket and adding one would require draining the system. Typical cases: modernizing an older substation (adding an ECL controller to existing piping), monitoring small-bore secondary loops, DHW return line, or heating loop supply temperature where the 3-second time constant lets the controller respond to flow changes in real time.

Designer note: a surface sensor reads correctly only if the pipe is thermally insulated at that spot (sensor and clamp go under the insulation). On a bare exposed pipe, ESM-11 systematically reads lower than the actual water temperature (convective loss to ambient air) — sometimes 3-5 °C off. Before mounting, clean the pipe surface to bright metal and apply thermal paste to minimize contact resistance.
When to choose ESM-11
- Modernizing an ECL Comfort system where existing piping has no immersion pockets
- Fast response (τ = 3 s) to pipe temperature changes required
- Small-bore pipe (DN 15-25) where a pocket would not fit or would restrict flow
- Compatibility: Danfoss ECL Comfort 110 / 210 / 296 / 310 (all application keys); any other controller accepting Pt1000 signal
When NOT to choose ESM-11
- High moisture / splash protection required — ESM-11 is only IP32; use the immersion ESMU-100 (IP54)
- Pipe will not be insulated (surface reading will be unreliable)

Frequently asked questions
How does ESM-11 differ from ESMU-100?
ESM-11 is clamped onto the outside of a pipe — no draining required, but accuracy depends on insulation and contact quality. ESMU-100 is immersed into the pipe via a pocket or directly with its G½" fitting — direct contact with the water, more accurate, but requires a pocket and system drain-down.
Is thermal paste required?
Recommended, not mandatory. A silicone thermal paste improves heat transfer from pipe wall to sensor body and cuts measurement error by 1-2 °C. Combine with proper clamp tension.
How long does ESM-11 last?
In practice — 10-15 years if properly insulated and mechanically undamaged. The Pt1000 element itself has a very long service life; the main failure sources are damaged cables, moisture in the terminal enclosure, or mechanical impact on the plastic housing.
Does it fit pipes larger than DN 65?
The clamp supplied covers DN 15-65. For larger pipes, order a separate clamp or use a universal metallic mounting. Contact us — we will recommend a suitable option.
