Have questions?
TL;DR: Danfoss ESMT — Pt1000 outdoor temperature sensor measuring ambient air from −50 to +50 °C. Wall-mounted on the shaded side of a building and feeds outdoor temperature signal to Danfoss ECL Comfort controllers, enabling the heating system to adjust supply temperature to weather conditions.
  • Type: Pt1000 (class B per EN 60751)
  • Measuring range: −50…+50 °C
  • Ingress protection: IP54
  • Mounting: wall mount (screws)

Where ESMT is used

ESMT is the weather-compensation sensor — its primary role is reading outdoor temperature and delivering it to the heating controller, which then adjusts supply water temperature per the heating curve. Mounted on the north or north-west facade of the building, shielded from direct sunlight and heat sources (windows, ventilation grilles). Used in virtually every substation running Danfoss ECL Comfort 110 / 210 / 296 / 310.

Designer note: the 15-min time constant of an outdoor sensor is intentionally slow — the system should not react to instantaneous wind gusts or brief sun exposure. If the ECL curve oscillates, the culprit is usually not the sensor but poor mounting location: south wall, too close to windows, or above an AC outdoor unit. In such spots the sensor reads a local microclimate, not the actual outdoor air.

When to choose ESMT

  • Installing or modernizing a substation controlled by Danfoss ECL Comfort
  • Outdoor sensor required for weather-compensation function
  • Replacing an old, failed or damaged outdoor sensor
  • Compatibility: Danfoss ECL Comfort 110 / 210 / 296 / 310 (all application keys); also any controller accepting Pt1000 signal (Siemens Climatix, Belimo, universal BMS modules)

Frequently asked questions

Why Pt1000 and not NTC10?

Danfoss ECL Comfort controller inputs are designed solely for Pt1000 (platinum) characteristic. An NTC10K sensor produces completely wrong readings. Before choosing another manufacturer's equivalent — verify the sensor type in your controller's documentation.

What is the maximum cable length?

Recommended up to 50 m using standard 2 × 1.5 mm² cable. For longer runs (up to 100 m) use a larger cross-section (2 × 2.5 mm²), otherwise wire resistance distorts the reading. In EMC-noisy environments use shielded cable, grounded on the controller side only.

Where to correctly mount the outdoor sensor?

Optimal location — north or north-west wall, at least 2 m above ground, at least 1 m away from windows / doors / ventilation grilles. Avoid direct sunlight, prolonged shade under overhangs, and positions above heat-radiating equipment (chimneys, AC outdoor units).

Does it fit Ouman controllers?

Not directly — Ouman uses NTC10K sensors (e.g. Ouman TMR40), whose characteristic differs from Pt1000. Ouman A203 / S203 / EH-800 require original Ouman sensors.
