Where XB12L-1 20 is used

The XB12L-1 20 is designed for small residential substations, single-family houses and townhouses requiring up to ~30 kW capacity. It is used as a primary/secondary loop separation exchanger in district heating (DH) connection points or as part of modular DHW systems. Its compact 289 × 118 mm footprint fits even in the smallest technical rooms.

The brazed gasket-free construction requires no periodic disassembly maintenance. The "L" in the name denotes a low plate chevron angle — reduced pressure drop, ideal for residential systems with limited pump head and longer service intervals.

Heat transfer capacity — quick calculation

Capacity depends on flow rate, ΔT and logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD). General formula: P = Q × ΔT × 1.163 (kW, Q m³/h, ΔT °C).

Example for heating mode (primary 80/60 °C → secondary 55/35 °C): at Q = 0.8 m³/h and effective ΔT ≈ 20 °C → P ≈ 18 kW. With Q = 1.2 m³/h and ΔT ≈ 20 °C → P ≈ 28 kW.

Designer note: the "L" plate geometry is optimized for low pressure drop, so at flows above ~1.5 m³/h the heat transfer coefficient remains stable while Δp does not grow exponentially. Before final sizing, run a calculation via Danfoss HeatSelector or request our technical consultation.

What does "L" mean in XB12L?

"L" denotes a low plate chevron angle — lower heat transfer coefficient but also lower pressure drop. The "H" (High) variant has a higher coefficient but higher Δp. "L" suits residential systems with limited pump head.

What is the difference between XB12L-1 and XB12L-2?

"-1" is a single-pass configuration with the standard 4-connection layout. "-2" is a two-pass version designed for specific DHW systems requiring higher temperature efficiency or connections routed on a single side.

Can glycol mixtures be used?

Yes. The XB12L series is compatible with ethylene glycol and propylene glycol solutions up to 50 %, when appropriate inhibitors are used. For DHW — only potable-grade fluids allowed.

What maintenance is required?

The brazed gasket-free construction requires no periodic disassembly maintenance. Only CIP flushing every 3-5 years is recommended if fouling signs appear (rising pressure drop or falling heat transfer).

Is it suitable for regions with aggressive water?

In some regions, district heating water contains elevated chlorides or ammonia — in such systems, copper brazing may shorten the exchanger's service life. In these cases we recommend Danfoss XB variants with stainless steel brazing or an alternative (AlfaNova). For hard water with elevated Ca/Mg carbonate content, limescale gradually builds up on the plates and reduces heat-transfer efficiency; for such systems gasketed (plate-and-frame) exchangers are preferable, as they can be periodically opened for mechanical or CIP cleaning.
