Brazed copper

Copper-brazed plate heat exchangers

Copper-brazed plate heat exchangers (Cu-BPHE) are one of the most popular solutions in modern heating, cooling and HVAC systems. Thanks to their advanced design, this compact heat exchanger ensures optimal heat transfer and long-term reliability in standard glycol and water systems.

Design and technological advantages

These units are made of stainless steel plates (most often AISI 316L) that are reliably joined by a copper alloy melted in a vacuum furnace. Because this brazed plate heat exchanger has no rubber gaskets, it offers exceptional resistance to high temperatures and pressure fluctuations, and maximum space saving.

Most popular models and manufacturers

  • SWEP B series: The most popular B-series models include B5, B8, B10, B12, B25, B35, B45, B60 and B120 (more about SWEP).
  • Alfa Laval CB series: Basic sizes CB14, CB20, CB30, CB60 and CB110.
  • Hexonic LB line: Models LB31, LB60 and LB70 (more about Hexonic).
  • Danfoss XB: Reliable brazed plate solutions for heat substations and cooling (Danfoss equipment).

Main technical parameters

  • Maximum temperature: up to 200°C (well suited to standard water or glycol mixtures). To avoid heat losses, original heat exchanger insulation is recommended.
  • Working pressure: PN10-45 bar range, depending on the selected model and plate configuration.
  • Connection types: Threaded (for smaller models), flanged (for larger flows) and quick-clamp / Victaulic type.

When is copper brazing not suitable?

Although copper-brazed plate heat exchangers are extremely versatile, water quality risks can sharply shorten their service life. The system is absolutely unsuitable if ammonia (NH3) or hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is used, or if there is a high concentration of chlorides. In an acidic medium, pitting corrosion and the release of copper ions begin (more about causes of failure). The most suitable alternative for aggressive media is Coresist heat exchangers, brazed with 100% stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

  • What is the difference between copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) brazed heat exchangers?
Copper-brazed models provide high efficiency in standard heating and cooling systems. Nickel-brazed units are chosen only when the medium contains additives that attack copper or when high sanitary standards are required.
  • What are the capacity ranges of copper-brazed heat exchangers?
Depending on the number of plates (SWEP B5 to B120), thermal capacity can range from a few kilowatts for a residential house to several megawatts for an industrial unit.
