Have questions?
TL;DR: Schneider Electric SpaceLogic (Forta series) M400 — brushless DC modulating linear actuator for Schneider V241, V311 and V321 2-way / 3-way globe valves. Designed for HVAC heating, DHW and cooling circuits in commercial and multi-family substations.
  • Application: modulating linear valve actuation in HVAC and district heating substations
  • Force: 400 N; auto-calibrated stroke 9-32 mm
  • Power / control: 24 V AC/DC, 0-10 V DC (switchable 2-10 / 0-5 / 5-10 V) or 3-point
  • Runtime / IP: 60 s full stroke, IP54

Where SpaceLogic M400 is used

SpaceLogic (Forta) M400 is selected for substation control valves in commercial and multi-family BMS installations using Schneider Electric V241 (2-way), V311 (3-way) or V321 globe valves. The 0-10 V DC control signal is compatible with any standard BMS controller (SpaceLogic AS-B/AS-P, Danfoss, Siemens Climatix, Trend IQ). The brushless DC motor delivers a long service life and low noise — useful when the actuator is mounted near occupied spaces.

Auto-calibration (auto-cal) — the actuator self-detects its stroke limits (in the 9-32 mm range) at first power-up, so one SKU covers a wide span of Schneider globe valve sizes. The 2-10 V DC position feedback signal lets the BMS see the actual valve position and detect mechanical faults.

CompatibilitySchneider V241 (2-way), V311, V321 (3-way) globe valve series; legacy VB-7xxx via AV-821 adaptor
Designer note: When retrofitting an older Satchwell / TAC BMS with VB-7xxx globe valves, order the AV-821 adaptor kit (Schneider F-27701) — the M400 does not fit older VB directly. New projects with V241/V311/V321 need no adaptor. For a spring-return (fail-safe) equivalent, choose the M400-S1 / M400-S2 variants.

When to choose SpaceLogic M400

  • Commercial / multi-family substations with Schneider Electric BMS (SpaceLogic AS-B/AS-P, Continuum)
  • HVAC heating, domestic hot water (DHW) and cooling water flow modulation
  • Where longer stroke (up to 32 mm) with mid-range 400 N force is required for medium-size globe valves
  • Retrofit replacement of older Satchwell / TAC M400A actuators (with AV-821 adaptor)
  • Compatibility: Schneider Electric V241 (2-way globe), V311, V321 (3-way globe) valves. Legacy VB-7xxx series — only with the AV-821 adaptor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the M400 have a spring return (fail-safe)?

No — 8800230030 is a non-spring return model. On power loss the valve stays at its last position. If the project requires spring return (e.g. heating coil frost protection), pick M400-S1 (spring-open) or M400-S2 (spring-closed) variants.

Can the M400 run on a 3-point signal if the controller is not 0-10 V?

Yes — internal DIP switches let you toggle the M400 into 3-point (open/close/stop) mode. Useful when the BMS uses older Satchwell relay outputs or when retrofitting Ouman/Danfoss controllers. Auto-calibration also works in 3-point mode.

What does 20 % duty cycle mean?

20 % duty cycle means the actuator can operate continuously for up to 2 minutes in any 10-minute window. For regular HVAC modulating control this poses no restriction — valve position is adjusted only by a few millimetres a few times per hour.

How to verify the actuator completes its stroke?

Engage manual override mode (cover switch) — the actuator auto-disconnects the PCBA power and allows manual stem movement across the full stroke. If it binds — the valve may have debris in its seat. Returning the switch to AUTO re-calibrates the stroke limits.

Do I need a dedicated transformer per M400 group?

Each M400 draws 7 VA — one Schneider 50 VA transformer can feed up to 6 actuators. A 100 VA transformer is preferred for larger groups, leaving headroom for inrush and 2× SPDT relay supply (if used).
