Electric actuators
A wide range of B2B HVAC electric actuators for reliable control of air dampers and water valves. We represent the market leaders, so we can ensure precise and long-lasting system operation in both commercial and industrial facilities where top-level building automation is essential.
Actuator types by purpose and manufacturer
Correct actuator selection depends on the element being controlled and the required force or torque. The main categories:
- For heat substations and water systems: Danfoss actuators are divided by application. The AMV10 model is ideal for small fan coil units (fan convectors). For heat substations the standard choice is the 3-position AMV20, AMV30, AMV130H and AMV150. The Danfoss AME series, on the other hand, is an electronic modulating (0-10V) actuator, designed specifically for precise proportional PID control in heat substations. They are recommended to be installed together with the matching control valves.
- For air dampers (rotary actuators): The torque of Belimo actuators is directly tied to the damper area: LM = 5Nm (for ~1m² area), NM = 10Nm (~2m²), SM = 20Nm, GM = 40Nm. We also offer Siemens rotary damper actuators: GDB (5Nm) and GLB (10Nm).
How to select an electric actuator correctly?
Qualified actuator selection requires assessing several critical system parameters:
- Safety function (Failsafe vs Fail-in-place): "Fail-in-place" actuators stay in their last position when the voltage is lost. The "Failsafe" function returns the actuator to a safe position. This can be implemented with a mechanical return spring (e.g. Belimo TF, LF, NF, SF, EF series, differentiated by size) or electronically with a SuperCap (capacitor).
- Control signal and BMS protocols: Modern HVAC automation requires smart solutions. Advanced actuators support MFT, MP-Bus, BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU protocols, allowing the equipment to be easily integrated into the building management system. Read more about the solutions in the article about automation.
- Protection (IP) class: For standard indoor rooms the IP54 standard is enough, but in outdoor or aggressive industrial conditions actuators with an IP66 (NEMA) rating must be chosen.
- Ecosystem compatibility: To ensure the best compatibility, Danfoss AMV/AME actuators are recommended to be used with Danfoss controllers (e.g. the ECL series), making full use of the ECL Portal ecosystem for monitoring and control.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Why is there critical confusion between the Belimo 24V and 230V voltage versions?
This is one of the most common mistakes when installing equipment. The 24V (AC/DC) versions are intended for low-voltage controllers and BMS systems, while 230V models are connected to mains voltage (most often for relay control). If these voltages are mixed up and 230V is applied to a 24V actuator, it is irreparably damaged, so check the project specification carefully.
2. What exactly is the difference between the Siemens SAS31.03 and SAS31.53 models?
To clarify: although both models are intended for similar tasks, the Siemens SAS31.03 has a safety spring-return function, while the SAS31.53 model has no spring (non-spring / fail-in-place).
3. With which valves are Danfoss actuators most often used in heating systems?
In heat substations, Danfoss AMV and AME valve actuators are most often supplied with combined VS2 or similar valves. Thermostatic valves or safety valves may also be used in the systems for full hydraulic balancing.
